What is a Partner?
A Partner is the term we use in THRIVE to designate each employee. Partners (employees) work with one Champion to develop a working relationship to seek and discuss work feedback, identify and share career aspirations and plans, and identify and work on development and training.
What is a Champion?
A Champion is the term we use in THRIVE for a specific person designated to help guide, provide resources and advocate for each Partner’s (employee) growth and development. A Champion might be a supervisor, manager, or another individual who is personally familiar with their Partner’s role and work; an advisor who offers feedback and guidance to flourish. THRIVE is designed to create a two-way relationship between a Champion and a Partner, with meaningful check-in conversations to promote growth, engagement, and a positive experience at Perkins+Will.
What is a Teammate?
A Teammate is someone that can speak to your work. Your Champion will use your list of Teammates to gain additional perspective and feedback.
How many Champions does each Partner have?
Each Partner will have one Champion.
How many Partners does each Champion have?
There is no strict guidance, but we hope that most Champions have between 1-4 Partners.
What if Partners and Champions don’t know each other when they start THRIVE?
Like any work relationship, we recommend that all Partners and Champions start to build their relationship and discuss how they will interact, how they like to communicate and what success will look like. There is more guidance in the THRIVE site on building the Partner/Champion relationship.
When are new employees introduced to THRIVE and their Champion?
A new employee is introduced to THRIVE and their Champion within their first month, and ideally on their first day. The Champion will be a critical person for the new hire to connect with to help with growth and create an effective on-boarding experience.
How will Partners get performance feedback if they don’t work with their Champion very often?
With a distributed workforce and changes in project teams and locations, there are times when Champions and Partners don’t work together all year, just as Primary Reviewers and Employees haven’t always done in years past. We still encourage Partners and Champions to have touchpoint and check-in conversations. And, we encourage Partners to seek other colleagues’ feedback and guidance that can be used with Champion conversations.
How long will Champions and Partners work together?
Our initial guidance is that it probably takes at least 12-18 months to build a relationship and get into an effective pattern of meetings conversations.
What if a Champion or Partner is not meeting his/her agreements (example: Not attending agreed upon meetings, not being available to have conversations)?
If a Partner/Champion pairing simply isn’t working, we suggest discussing with your local HR manager or Managing Director.
How is a Champion different from a Supervisor or Manager?
In some cases, your supervisor or manager may also be your Champion, but that isn’t always the case. Conversations with your Champion will focus on feedback, career and development vs. project tasks and day to day accountability.
Is THRIVE mandatory?
Unlike similar initiatives (like year-end performance reviews), THRIVE isn’t mandatory, but we do offer that everyone has an opportunity for ongoing feedback, development and career discussion with someone who can provide guidance, counsel and advocacy.
What training is available?
There are resources and tools available in the Thrive Tools page. Additionally we will be releasing the “Champion Lab” development series in 2020. This will be available to Champions across the firm.
Is there a year-end review?
THRIVE does not have a year-end review. Feedback, development and career conversations are ongoing, throughout the year.
How do I access last year’s (2016) performance review?
Please contact your HR Manager for a copy of past reviews.
How will bonus and salary increases be determined if there is no year-end review or review rating?
Similar to the most recent year-end performance review, office leaders (and corporate leaders for support functions) will make bonus and salary increases based on employee performance. Unlike that system, more regular conversations between Champions and Partners is intended to give a more accurate picture of not only a Partner’s performance, but also how he/she is actively growing and developing.
